The Mustt Mustt (Duck Pond Dub Mix) is a landmark remix by British trip-hop group Massive Attack of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s 1990 Qawwali fusion track Mustt Mustt, from the album of the same name, produced in collaboration with Michael Brook for Real World Records. It was Massive Attack’s first-ever remix, created in 1990 at Real World Studios, named after the studio’s nearby duck pond. The remix blends Khan’s transcendent Sufi vocals with Bristol’s dub and trip-hop influences, featuring heavy, shimmering dub beats, wobbly samples, and spaced-out echo effects. This fusion of traditional Qawwali with electronic elements created a groundbreaking sound, making it the first Urdu-language song to reach the UK charts. Praised by figures like Nitin Sawhney as “one of the best remixes of all time,” it helped popularize Khan’s music globally, with the album selling over 600,000 copies outside the Indian subcontinent. The track, rooted in the Sufi text Dama Dam Mast Qalandar, was later featured in a Coca-Cola ad, further cementing its cultural impact.
